Episode 2.8 – There are two kinds of SimCity players in this world

As we prepare for all things Freedom and America, Internet friend Bobby Big Wheel stops by to talk about computer games, the only way we could trick our parents into thinking we were doing something educational as kids while we were really conquering nations with the click of a mouse. Some all-star names are covered like SimCity, as well as some lesser known hits like Amazon Trail.

In the end we laughed, we cried, and we remembered what it was like to be kids in front of a computer screen trying to figure out whether to build roads or a new power plant when we really should’ve been kicking soccer balls instead.

  1. Christian says:

The SimCity comment about how the mass transit does nothing was eye-opening, as someone who believes in transit options. Now that I look back, the highways, trains, and bus stations were something I forced on my populace, not something that was intuitively helpful.

I also played a little Amazon Trail, but the only thing I remembered about it was that when you went fishing, you could only see the shadows of fish under the river and sometimes you broke your harpoon on what was really a log.

Another bad Sim game I played was SimHealth. It was a game (?) where you designed how the national healthcare worked. I don’t remember a whole lot, probably because it wasn’t a very interesting game, but basically you had one home screen that showed how your plan was affecting hospitals, big businesses, insurance companies, and citizens (e.g., if insurance companies didn’t have to cover much, they had a huge skyscraper, but if they were paying out more, they had a damaged shack of a building). The game sucked so bad. It’s one of those that makes me want to go back in time and slap child-me for playing it.
